Elves at Santa Claus Inc. are gearing up for annual event
This holiday season take a trip with us to Manhattan and stroll 5th avenue to view the famous and fabulous storefronts adorned with beautiful scense and gift displays that line these chic city sidewalks.  Walk the streets of Greenwich Village and explore the beautifully decorated doors of the old historic brownstones.  Have lunch and/or dinner in a wintery Central Park and take part in the chic couture fashion scene of New York City.  In the evening the men can relax in a Manhattan style gentleman's club and together we will enjoy all of the finery that makes a Christmas evening in the city special.
The volunteers are the "elves" of Santa Claus Inc., the 59-year-old organization that helps parents in need give to their children at Christmastime. Elves are in charge of the Miracle Department. In December 2010, Santa Claus Inc. provided a Merry Christmas for a record 17,000 underprivileged children in the San Bernardino, Colton, Redlands and Rialto school districts. The need is growing. This much-needed service for families who are often referred to as the "working poor" was made possible through the very generous support of local communities and hundreds of volunteers, according to Karen DiCarlo, Santa Claus Inc. president and head elf. "We are gearing up for lots of families this year," she told me. "Clothing is being packaged, toys have been purchased." New toys this year include boogie boards and skateboards, action figures, games, dollhouses, doll clothes, My Little Ponies, Barbies - all kinds of toys - many donated by Mattel. "Every year we try to find another way to help more children - especially in this economy. This year, we're aiming at helping 20,000," says Don DiCarlo, Karen's husband and elf extraordinaire. The nonprofit's biggest fundraiser, the beautiful Christmas Tree Lane event, is right around the proverbial corner.

Held annually at the National Orange Show Events Center, this year's "Christmas on Fifth Avenue" is Dec. 2-3. The black-tie formal event is Friday evening and the luncheon event is Saturday. The evening bash is beyond fabulous with the designer-decorated Christmas tree preview, a gourmet dinner, Macy's Fashion Extravaganza by Couture Productions featuring fashions from Macy's San Bernardino and Macy's Victoria Gardens, live and silent auctions, unique Christmas boutiques, a drawing for the designer trees and gifts, and dancing to live music until midnight (I'm exhausted just telling you about it). On Saturday, there's the tree preview, a holiday luncheon, Macy's fashion extravaganza, the live and silent auctions, Christmas boutique, drawing for the trees and gifts and a silent auction for custom designer wreaths. Ticket prices for the evening event are $125 per person; luncheon tickets are $65 per person. If you want to do both, there's a special price of $160. Also, anyone wishing to sponsor a child for Christmas can do so for just $25 per child. Your donation will provide toys, clothing, books and educational materials under the tree for the child you adopt this Christmas. "Fund a Child" donations can be sent to Santa Claus Inc. P.O. Box 2642, San Bernardino, CA 92406.

Each year, more than 250 Santa Claus Inc. elves work from January to December to provide new clothing, toys and quality new books, handmade quilts, afghans and blankets and educational materials to the children. Parents are then invited to "shop for free" at organization's warehouse during the distribution in December. According to Karen, a new Monthly Outreach Program has been added because of the tremendous need throughout the San Bernardino area. "We realized we need to help throughout the year - children's need is year-round," she said. "We choose a different organization to help each month. It looks like its successful and we're very excited about it," said Karen, who's in her 10th year as president. Here, at least, the spirit of Christmas is alive and well.
